Know Before You Enroll

What the Ontario security guard licence requires

The straight answers people search for before starting, so you know exactly what you are signing up for.

1. The basic requirements

To hold an Ontario security guard licence you must be 18 or older, legally eligible to work in Canada, and have a clean criminal record. If that is you, the path is open.

2. The ministry test

After training you book the provincial test, which covers Ontario security law, emergency response, communication and patrol procedures, the same material our course and practice materials prepare you for.

3. Fees and renewal

The province charges its own testing and licensing fees on top of your course fee, and licences must be renewed before they expire. Official details are on the Ontario government licensing page.

New to Canada and starting fresh

Security is one of the most accessible careers for newcomers with work eligibility: the training is online, the licence is provincial, and demand is steady across the GTA. Many of our own guards started exactly here.

Already CPR certified?

Skip the bundle and take Basic Security Training on its own for $169. Your existing first aid certificate counts toward the licence as long as it is valid.

Employers who need licensed staff

If you manage a property and need trained, licensed guards rather than training itself, Supreme Security Services provides guard services across the GTA, staffed by people trained to this standard.

Pricing

What security guard training costs in Ontario

Course pricing is flat and published, with tax included: the Basic Security Training and First Aid bundle is $225, Basic Security Training alone is $169 for those who already hold CPR certification, and Emergency First Aid and CPR/AED Level C on its own is $84.

Budget separately for the province’s own testing and licence fees, which are paid to the ministry when you book the test and submit your application. There are no hidden charges on the course side: the price you see is the price you pay, certificates included.

Not sure which package fits? Call 1-877-887-7110 and we will tell you straight, based on what certification you already hold.

FAQ

Ontario security guard licence questions, answered

Answer-first responses to the questions future guards ask before enrolling.

Complete a ministry-approved 40-hour basic training course, hold a valid first aid certificate, pass the provincial licensing test, then apply to the ministry for your licence. Supreme Academy covers the training and first aid, preps you for the test and supports your application. Official requirements are on the Ontario government site.
At Supreme Academy: $225 for Basic Security Training plus Emergency First Aid and CPR/AED Level C, $169 for Basic Security Training alone if you already hold CPR certification, or $84 for the first aid course on its own. All prices include tax. The province charges its own test and licence fees separately.
Ontario does not use numbered levels: there is one provincial security guard licence, earned through the 40-hour training, first aid and the ministry test. “Level 1” usually refers to other provinces’ systems or to an employer’s internal ranks, not to an Ontario licence class.
Yes. The 40-hour course is fully online and self-paced, so you can complete it from home anywhere in Ontario, whether that is Toronto, Brampton, London or Ottawa.
Yes, a valid first aid certificate is required for the Ontario licence. If you do not have one, the $225 bundle includes Emergency First Aid and CPR/AED Level C. If you already hold valid CPR certification, the $169 basic course is all you need.
The test is based on the ministry’s training curriculum: Ontario security law and regulations, emergency procedures, communication and conflict resolution, and patrol and property protection. Our course covers the same ground, and we provide practice materials before you book.
The course is 40 hours at your own pace, so the timeline is largely up to you. After you finish, you book the ministry test, and once you pass, you submit your licence application and wait for the ministry to issue it.
Renewals are handled through the province, and you should renew before your licence expires to avoid a gap in your eligibility to work. You do not repeat the 40-hour course to renew. Details and current fees are on the Ontario licensing page, and if your situation is complicated, call us and we will point you the right way.
If you are 18 or older, legally eligible to work in Canada and have a clean criminal record, you can pursue the licence. Security is a common first career for newcomers, and the online format makes the training easy to fit around other commitments.
Yes. Supreme Security Services hires licensed guards for condo, commercial, event and patrol posts across the GTA on an ongoing basis. Apply through our careers page once your licence is issued, and mention that you trained with Supreme Academy.
